Storm summary

Don formed from a non-tropical low roughly midway between Bermuda and the Azores and was first identified on 14 July 2023. It began as a subtropical storm, transitioned to a tropical cyclone by 17 July, and moved generally northeastward over the open Atlantic. Don strengthened through 22–23 July, then weakened as it moved farther northeast and became post-tropical on 25 July before dissipating late that day. There were no landfalls associated with Don; the storm remained well away from any coastline for its entire lifetime. No coastal watches or warnings were issued. Don’s maximum sustained winds reached 65 kt (75 mph) from 1800 UTC 22 July to 0000 UTC 23 July, with an estimated minimum central pressure of 986 mb. At peak intensity it was a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Because Don stayed over the open ocean, the report lists no storm surge measurements or notable rainfall totals for coastal cities or counties. There were also no ship reports of tropical-storm-force winds tied to the cyclone. No deaths or damage were reported in association with Don. The storm had no direct impacts on land. Noteworthy items: Don began as a subtropical system and became tropical as its core tightened. NHC track and intensity forecasts for Don were more accurate than recent 5‑year averages, and no watches or warnings were required.
