Storm summary
A well-defined low formed from a tropical wave over the central tropical Atlantic and became a tropical depression at 0600 UTC 27 September 2024 about 1,150 nautical miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. The system strengthened to Tropical Storm Joyce by 1200 UTC that same day and moved generally west‑northwestward. Joyce reached its peak intensity on 27–28 September, then gradually weakened and became a tropical depression by 0000 UTC 30 September before dissipating later that day.
Joyce remained over the open central Atlantic for its entire life and did not make landfall. No coastal watches or warnings were issued at any time.
The maximum sustained winds were 45 kt (about 52 mph) with an estimated minimum central pressure of 1001 mb, corresponding to a moderate tropical storm at peak intensity (27 September, 1800 UTC through 28 September, 1200 UTC).
There were no storm surge reports or rainfall impacts associated with Joyce over land because the storm stayed well away from coastal areas. Consequently, no surge heights or rainfall totals for cities or counties were recorded in association with this system.
No deaths or damage were reported in connection with Joyce. The storm produced no direct or indirect casualties and caused no known destruction.
Forecasts and warnings performed well: the system was first mentioned in the Tropical Weather Outlook 144 hours before formation and higher formation probabilities were issued well in advance. NHC official track and intensity forecasts for Joyce had low errors compared with recent averages, and no forecasting models consistently outperformed the official intensity forecasts.
