Storm summary
A tropical depression formed from a tropical wave near 1200 UTC on 1 November 2024 about 1,240 nautical miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. The system moved generally west-northwest and became Tropical Storm Lane by 0600 UTC on 2 November. Lane was short lived, peaking on 2 November and weakening to a remnant low by 1200 UTC on 3 November before dissipating later that day.
Lane never approached land and produced no coastal watches or warnings. There were no reported landfalls associated with this storm.
The maximum sustained wind estimate for Lane was 40 knots (46 mph) from 1200 to 1800 UTC on 2 November, and the estimated minimum central pressure was 1004 mb. At peak intensity Lane was a weak tropical storm (below hurricane strength).
Because Lane stayed far from shore, there were no reported storm surge measurements tied to the cyclone. Rainfall and coastal flooding impacts were not reported in the NHC record, and no specific surge or rainfall totals for cities or counties are given.
There were no reports of damage or casualties—no direct or indirect fatalities were associated with Lane. Regions near land were not affected because the storm remained well over the central eastern Pacific.
Notable aspects include that Lane developed as the middle system during an Intertropical Convergence Zone breakdown and formed farther west than many short-term forecasts expected. NHC track forecast errors for Lane were a bit higher than recent 5‑year averages, while intensity forecast errors were near the recent averages.
