Storm summary
A small tropical cyclone formed from a tropical wave that crossed Central America on October 16–17 and entered the eastern Pacific on October 18. The system organized into a tropical depression by 0600 UTC 24 October about 615 nautical miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. It moved generally west-northwestward across the central and western eastern Pacific basin and remained over open water until weakening and dissipating by about 0000 UTC 30 October.
The storm never approached close enough to require coastal watches or warnings and did not make landfall. Sonia remained well offshore of Mexico and other land areas for its entire lifetime, so there were no landfall dates or locations to report.
Sonia reached a peak intensity of 45 knots (about 52 mph) from 1200 UTC 25 October to 1200 UTC 26 October, with an estimated minimum central pressure of 1001 mb. At peak it was a moderate tropical storm (below hurricane strength).
Because Sonia stayed over the open ocean, there were no reported storm surge measurements or significant rainfall totals on land associated with the system; no ship reports of tropical-storm-force winds were received. Likewise, there were no reports of damage or casualties linked to Sonia.
No deaths or injuries were reported in connection with Sonia. The regions most affected were limited to the open ocean; no coastal impacts were recorded. Forecasts and track guidance performed well for this storm: NHC track and intensity forecasts were generally accurate and the 7-day genesis outlooks successfully identified the area where the storm formed.
